We were born in the heart of the Northern Cape, in a small farming town called Carnarvon in the Great Karoo. The town is nestled within acres of surrounding farmland, which is used mainly for the raising of sheep. Our ancestors settled in this town in 1903.
Growing up in the Karoo awakened us to the principle of “less is more,” highlighting the realization that meat found in the city often times was significantly less tasty than the one we were used to growing up on the farm. Our goal was to sustainably allow everyone to realize how good meat can be by making this amazing lamb available to you.
The Karoo region, and specifically our farms and processes, yields tender, succulent meat. Our aim is to introduce our product to avid meat consumers worldwide and allow for sustainable growth and traceability right to farms on which these sheep were raised.
Karoo lamb’s distinctive flavour profile is achieved because our animals are allowed to to graze only on the the indigenous karoo bushes such as Plinthus karrooicus, Eriocephalus ericoides, Pentzia spinescens, Pteronia glauca, Pentzia incana, and Salsola glabrescens.
The Karoo sheep feed mainly on this indigenous fauna and in unpolluted wide-open spaces with and are hydrated with fresh karoo spring water. This allows the animal to develop naturally away from feed lots, antibiotics or other practices that are sadly becoming commonplace in our food chain.
In Islam, Muslims are guided by strict principles around the consumption of meat to ensure that strictly halaal standards are met. Principles like Tayyib (good, clean) and ethical treatment of animals are extremely important. Dellville is our main farm, located in the Great Karoo, on the outskirts of the town of Carnarvon; a region characterized by breath-taking skies, clean water and unpolluted air.
The processing plant operates within this region and the prepared meat is immediately vacuum-sealed and frozen to ensure the highest standard of freshness. Refrigerated trucks then transport the meat to guarantee that the cold chain is maintained.
